Saturday Mid-Major Winners

March 02, 2013

Record: 46-46

Rhode Island +13 vs. Temple
The Owls are playing their second game in three days as they host Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon. Rhody most likely has just three games left in their season as they won't be making the A-10 tournament. This is a live dog who has shown they can score this season. URI won at St. Louis 82-80 and has lost by seven at Butler where a lot better teams have been crushed. They have a three point loss at Richmond and a five point loss at Seton Hall. One of the best scorers in the league is on the Rams squad in Xavier Munford who is putting up over 17 per game. The Owls meanwhile are hard to figure out. They played poorly for 38 minutes at home against Detroit before walking up and winning. They failed to cover in the process and aren't a guarantee to do so at home where they already have three puzzling losses. I think Temple pulls it out, but Rhode Island will be there at the end.

Ball State +7 vs. Toledo
Toledo has just three games left in their season as they are ineligible for the postseason. The Rockets host Ball State and are coming off a 65-62 home loss to Western Michigan. Homecourt has been kind although close this season for them with six of their last eight there either being losses or single digit wins. Ball State, meanwhile is playing some of their best basketball of the season having won four of their last five with two of those coming on the road. Jauwan Scaife and Majok Majok along with Jesse Berry make this a dangerous team. We covered with the Cardinals back on January 16th when they lost by seven at highly difficult Akron. I think this one will be close too if not a BSU victory.

Texas San Antonio Moneyline vs. Seattle
Two WAC teams going in different directions take the court in Texas on Saturday. Seattle has lost six straight and have won just two road games overall. They lost by two at Texas State on Thursday and are looking for revenge after a 78-75 home loss to UTSA on January 24th. The Roadrunners are hot right now winners of three straight games as they enter their last home contest of the season. They are led by Kannon Burrage (17.5 PPG) and Michael Hale III (16.4) who are a potent backcourt. I don't see why they won't continue their hot play at home against a wounded Seattle team.

Belmont/Jacksonville State Over 136
For the third time this season, we'll attack the over in the rare Ohio Valley Conference game. Once again it involves Belmont who seemingly has had no problems scoring this season. They have been held under 70 points just twice in conference play with one of those being 69. This is a squad that likes to pick up the pace a little and has no problems playing an uptempo game. The lowest point total they've had at home in conference play came last time out against SIU-E with 73. The Gamecocks are a talented team with Tarvin Gaines leading the way scoring almost 17 points per game. He's got help from Brian Williams and Ronnie Boggs. They have scored 67 or more in four straight and five of their last six games. These two teams put up 135 back on January 3rd when they played. We think they will go over that total on Saturday.
