Bulls Hurricanes Game Recap

Miami 40, South Florida 9: Stephen Morris threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns and the Hurricanes had three receivers eclipse the 100-yard mark as they toppled the Bulls at Sun Life Stadium.

Clive Walford (135 yards), Herb Waters (130) and Phillip Dorsett (104) led the Miami receiving corps, with Dorsett pulling in a career-high 11 catches as the Hurricanes (6-5) hung 548 total yards on the South Florida defense.

With USF already down to its backup quarterback to start the game, Miami added insult to injury, knocking out starting quarterback Bobby Eveld on the second series of the game for the Bulls (3-7). Eveld, starting in place of B.J. Daniels (broken leg), departed with a left shoulder injury.

Matt Floyd filled in and threw for 175 yards on 20-of-35 passing. Floyd was intercepted twice.

The Hurricanes dominated throughout the first half but settled for three field goals from Jake Wieclaw in establishing a 9-0 advantage 5:17 into the second quarter. Two plays later, after a James Gaines interception at the South Florida 21, Morris found Kendal Thompkins for a 15-yard score to put Miami up 16-0.

Leading 16-3 to start the second half, Duke Johnson capped a 10-play, 76-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to extend the lead. The Hurricanes cruised from there.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami recorded its fourth win in five games against USF ... The Hurricanes have forced 22 turnovers (11 interceptions and 11 fumbles) on the season - six more than they managed a year ago ... USF head coach Skip Holtz removed Eveld's redshirt to allow him to start against the Hurricanes.

Preview: South Florida Bulls at Miami Hurricanes

Miami plays its final non-conference game of the year looking for a win to become bowl eligible when it hosts South Florida on Saturday. The Hurricanes lead the ACC Coastal Division with a 4-3 record, and a victory against Duke next week will punch their ticket to the ACC championship game Dec. 1. After a 4-1 start to the season, Miami has gone backward at 1-4 in its last five games. Last week, the Hurricanes dropped a heartbreaker, 41-40 at Virginia, despite a school-record 373 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns from freshman running back Duke Johnson. The Bulls are trying to finish a frustrating season on a positive note, finally snapping a six-game losing skid with a 13-6 victory over Connecticut prior to a week off.

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (3-6): The Bulls lost senior starting quarterback B.J. Daniels to a broken left leg in the UConn game and coach Skip Holtz has yet to name a replacement between redshirt freshman Matt Floyd and junior Bobby Eveld, with the pair splitting reps in practice during week off. South Florida ranks near the bottom of the conference across the board statistically, and things have been particularly troublesome on defense. The Bulls yield just shy of 400 yards per game overall, with only Temple more generous to opposing offenses.

ABOUT MIAMI (5-5): A win for the Hurricanes makes them bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive season and the eighth time since joining the ACC in 2004. Johnson and senior running back Mike James have combined for 1,234 yards and 11 touchdowns on 232 carries. Johnson ranks third in the ACC with 705 yards, while James sits 10th with 529. Miami's defense has averaged just shy of 490 yards against and is particularly porous against the run, with opponents gaining 231 yards per game this season.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Miami leads the series 3-1.

2. The Bulls have given up an average of 31.5 points per game on the road this season, while the Hurricanes score 29.2 at home.

3. Johnson's 1,688 all-purpose yards this season rank third on Miami's single-season list ahead of the likes of Edgerrin James, Lamar Miller and Santana Moss.
