Most times this column will be dedicated to gambling on the court with college basketball, but I must address a problem off the court with student sections in general. I went to school and saw my team win a national championship. Things have changed there since then so let me address a few things:
1) Please don't go in the student section if you aren't going to wear either your school's colors or something with their logo on it. It's just not a good look on the television if you are a team with Red as your color and your student section looks more like a rainbow then a river of blood. It can't be that hard to find something to wear and it doesn't have to match.
2) Let's talk court storming. If you are a ranked team or a program worthy of massive respect, you cannot storm the court. Indiana committed a foul in this respect earlier in the year. The Hoosiers fans should NEVER storm the court. If you just beat a team who is unranked then you should stay in your seats too. Beat a rival? Stay in your seat. If you must storm the court, please don't proceed that with the old "Overrated" chant. If that team is so overrated then you really don't need to go on the court to celebrate a win over them.
3) Chants...every school has them, but some of them have to go. Can we stay away from the explicit language? There are kids at the game and it doesn't sound so hot on TV either. We had a chant that went along with the Hey Song at Syracuse, but now that's disappeared as the school made us stop play the song altogether. Keep it PG folks...you aren't intimidating if you hurl F bombs at your opponent.
4) Finally, and this probably should have gone with #1, but it deserved it's own point. What's with wearing the halloween costumes? This is not a costume party and you look like an idiot should you get on TV. I don't think this is an unreasonable request at all.
5) I guess I have one more. Hey students, there's no need to leave early from a game. Homework will still be there when you go home. You only have so many basketball games in your college career so don't waste it by going home early.
These are just a few of the things I notice about college kids nowadays. We'll return to gambling soon but I had to get that off my chest.
