Bracket Buster Edition

February 23, 2013

It's Bracket Buster Saturday and we're going to blow things out here on the blog. We'll discuss a bunch of these games and give picks as we see fit.

Record: 36-38

Iona +5.5 vs. Indiana State
A pair of teams that are scuffling big time right now are on display early on Saturday morning. Iona has lost five of their last six games, but each of the losses have come by three points or less. This is one of the most potent offenses in the country behind Momo Jones, Sean Armand and David Laury. This is a team that has won at Georgia and St. Bonaventure while also getting experience at La Salle and St. Joe's. The Sycamores have lost three straight and four of their last six. Go figure this team who beat Miami, Wichita State and Creighton, but lost to Southern Illinois, Missouri State and Morehead State. Slow down Jake Odum and I think you beat these guys. Small lean to Iona in this one.

Eastern Kentucky/Valparaiso Over 144
The over has not been a bad bet in the history of the BracketBusters. This is another matchup of teams where offense rules out. Valpo has scored 70 points or more in 10 of their last 13 games with the other three games being 68 and 69. The Crusaders have beaten Murray State this season 66-64. They will have the advantage on the boards as EKU is one of the worst teams on the glass especially on the defensive end. The Colonels are a potent bunch as well scoring 80 or more in five of their last six games. Their offense doesn't rest on the road either. Both of these are good teams, but they have more important things to worry about in conference. We love the over in this one.

Western Michigan Moneyline vs. Pacific
This is an odd matchup especially for Pacific who has to fly far to play a meaningless game for them against Western Michigan. The Broncos have won eight of their last ten games including five straight home contests. They have four guys who score 10 points or more per game and have taken care of business at home. Pacific meanwhile has lost seven of their last nine road games. They struggled against some of the bottom feeders of the Big West conference. This one may be close, but I think WMU wins.

Illinois Chicago Pick vs. Bradley
Missouri Valley vs. Horizon in this one with both conferences middle of the road teams in this matchup. The Flames are coming home after a 1-3 road trip. They are a strong defensive team for the most part playing a lot of their games in the 50's and 60's. They have won three of their last four home games and are led by Gary Talton. Bradley hates playing on the road. They have lost their last few games away from home by the following margins: 8, 20, 17, 34, 10 and 31. They aren't the most potent offense and have been slowed down by the defensive teams of the Missouri Valley. I like to lean to the home teams in the games that don't really matter to the teams.

IPFW Pick vs. Bowling Green
We went against IPFW vs. potent Oakland on Wednesday night and they took the ballgame giving them their straight victory. Bowling Green played a home game against New Orleans on Thursday night so they will have one day to travel for this game. The Falcons have won just one road game this season and just haven't played their best games away from home. IPFW has Frank Gaines who will be the best player on the court. Another case of a home team in a bad game so we'll take the Mastodons.

Hampton Moneyline vs. St. Peter's
The Pirates are playing very good basketball right now. They have won six of their last seven games with the lone loss coming to Norfolk State by three at home so we know the Pirates can hang with the cream of their conference crop. They are led by Deron Powers and his 12 points per game. The reason we are going moneyline instead of spread here is that this will be a low scoring game. Neither team has a problem playing in the 60's. The Peacocks have won just twice since January 4th with those wins coming at home. They have lost by 15, 17, 8, 19, 11, 13 and 16 in their last seven road games. We'll take Hampton to win.

Tennessee Tech -8.5 vs. UMKC
The Golden Eagles feast on bad teams at home this season. They have won three straight home games by double digits and are led by Jud Dillard who averages the most points and rebounds for them. The Kangaroos last three road games were losses by 21, 32 and 37. They have lost seven of their last eight games and are not a very potent offensive team. We like TTech to roll in this one.
