Let the Good Time Roll

February 06, 2013

The good times keep coming for the blog as we picked up another win yesterday in the Missouri Valley. We've had some success lately with these small home favorites who have held serve in their own gym.

Record: 26-16

Central Florida +2 vs. Southern Miss
This is another classic case of a talented home team getting shortchanged a bit by Vegas. Southern Miss has not lost in conference and in fact has just four losses overall this season. When you look at their schedule, their best wins were against Georgia and Denver. They have lost to Arizona, Louisiana Tech, Wichita State and New Mexico State. I think they've fattened up on a lot of cupcakes to get where they are. They have two double digit scorers led by Dwayne Davis and Jerrold Brooks. UCF meanwhile is a very talented team led by Keith Clanton and Isaiah Sykes. They don't have the depth of Southern Miss, but they are home. They have taken care of business there for the most part losing to South Florida and Miami. This is a team that has won six of their last eight and should be able to get the win on Wednesday.

Tulsa -3.5 vs. UAB
The Golden Hurricane are 12-10 overall, 4-4 in Conference USA as they host the Blazers. Tulsa has lost three of their last four games, but should be motivated for this one. They are trying to snap a two game losing streak which included a three point home loss to Southern Miss. They are led by James Woodard's 12.6 ppg along with Pat Swilling Jr. who puts up over 10 per contest. UAB has more scoring options, but a shorter bench and less depth. The Blazers have lost seven of their last eight games with four of those coming on the road and all by at least five points. The last game they won not in their building was back in November when they beat mighty Troy. We'll take a chance Tulsa snaps out of their funk and wins.

Fordham/St. Louis Under 133.5
Mark this date down as I rarely if EVER take unders. Something un-American about rooting for defense in college basketball. Thankfully, there will be plenty of options on television so I can avoid watching this. The Billikens are all about defense having held all but three of their opponents in the 60's or below. They are a mediocre offensive team especially on the road where they have put up 54, 67 and 59 among other efforts. They will travel to take on Fordham who will be without Chris Gaston who is their best player. Fordham has played two straight home games in the 60's against Rhode Island and St. Joe's. They have played only eight home games in their 22 overall so far. This has the makings of a 67-50 type game, so hold your nose and take the under.
