Sometimes the best victories are the games we don't play.

January 25, 2013

I was into Loyola Marymount on Thursday, but some things nagged me so I put them on the watch list. They lose at home to Pepperdine and we don't hand you the reader a loss.

Record: 11-7

A reminder, these lines may not be the ones you get on Saturday. These are opening lines from Don Best Sports.

Duke -11.5 vs. Maryland
Whether you believe Duke practiced after the Miami game or not, this will be a hellacious time for the Blue Devils players. They return home and get one of their rivals at their place so this is going to get ugly. Maryland is 15-4 on the year, but they really havent performed too well in conference play. The Terps got a one point win over NC State at home, but the Wolf Pack are struggling right now. Maryland lost at North Carolina and then struggled to beat Boston College at home. I fear for their lives in this one. We'll take Duke.

Marshall/Memphis Over 136
The Thundering Herd are pretty bad on the defensive side of the ball. They have given up over 100 points twice including last time out against Southern Miss. The other time was when they allowed 103 to Hofstra at their place and they are nowhere near a potent offensive team. This is a better basketball team then their record with four players averaging over ten points per game. Now that DeAndre Kane is healthy they are a lot more potent despite their last result. Memphis is deep as usual with eight players putting up at least six points per game. The Tigers calling card is defense, but they are putting up points at home in a nice clip this season. They have scored at least 70 in three of their last five games at FedEx. They should score more then that against this porous defense.

Oregon State -4 vs. Washington State
Wazzu has lost five of their last six and wrap up their Oregon swing in Corvallis on Saturday. This is a team who has lost all five of their road games this season. Their lack of road tests should hurt them in this one as the Beavers defend home court well. The Cougars miss Faisel Aden who has not played yet this year. They rely heavily on Brock Motum and Mike Ladd for their scoring while OSU has a deeper roster of options. They are led by Roberto Nelson and Ahmad Starks. They are coming off a nice win over Washington last time out which snapped a five game losing streak. The Beavers are the better team in this one and it will show on Saturday.

Butler -6 vs. Temple
Alright, i'll take the bait in this one. It seems all too easy with the Owls struggling mightily having lost to St. Bonaventure while nipping Penn and GW as of late. Butler is coming off a tough loss at La Salle and gets Rotnei Clarke back in the lineup for a home game at a place where they rarely lose. I would have put this line near 10 if I was vegas. Instead, I will take their gift and give it to you.

South Dakota State -1.5 vs. North Dakota State
This is a rematch of a December 29th game that went to ND State 65-62. In this one they won't have leading scorer Taylor Braun at all while SD State will have Nate Wolters who has been one of the most underrated players in America. I don't get this line either as the Jackrabbits are cruising. This is a hated rivalry, but I think the homestanding Jackrabbits take this one easily.
